UTAG-UCC Women Executives Celebrate International Day of the Girl Child

The Women executives of the University of Cape Coast branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) have interacted with female students at the Imam Khomeini Islamic Junior High School at Amamoma to motivate them to achieve their career goals.

The occasion was on the theme: "Girls' Vision for the Future."

It was to highlight the importance of addressing issues such as gender inequality, child marriage and limited access to education and quality healthcare services.

The International Day of the Girl Child celebrates girls' power and highlights the barriers they face, as declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011.

The Vice-President of UTAG-UCC, Dr. (Mrs) Joana Eva Doodoo, addressing the students encouraged them to dream big and aspire for greatness. She advised them to persevere and be committed to excellence and self-improvement.

Dr. Doodoo said UTAG was more committed to ensuring that girls stayed in school and achieved their goals.

She indicated that UTAG had impacted a lot of adolescent girls positively, giving them a new lease of confidence to face life's challenges.

The Women’s Executive Officer of UTAG, Dr. Martha Osei-Marfo, on her part, stressed the need to empower the girl child to promote equal and inclusive society.

She added that society would keep to its vision to always mentor and reach out to the less-privileged girl child, and show love to a lady in need of either physical, financial or psychological attention.

As part of the celebration, the executives presented exercise books, pens, pencils and erasers to the girls.

The girls pledged to work hard to become responsible citizens and the voice of other vulnerable groups.
