Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis to visit UCC

The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, is set to visit the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in March 2026.

The Special Envoy of St. Kitts and Nevis, Ama Martin, made the announcement when she led a delegation to pay a courtesy call to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Denis Aheto.

According to her, the Prime Minister will hold high-level discussions with management on areas of academic collaborations, including renewable energy.

She explained, “I came here from Saint Kitts and Nevis, the CARICOM, the Caribbean, and we are seeking to establish greater ties between the Caribbean and UCC in particular and Ghana, at large.

Beyond renewable energy, Madam Martin highlighted sectors such as culture amongst others as areas of immediate strategic interest.

On his part, Prof. Aheto described the engagement as a significant opportunity for the University to expand its global connections, emphasising that for UCC, in particular, it presents a chance to strengthen academic relations.

He underscored the importance of renewal energy as the University would like to install solar energy around campus to reduce the cost of electricity.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor reiterated the readiness of the University to receive the Prime Minister and his entourage in 2026.

South-South cooperation

In recent years, there has been increased interest in fostering South-South cooperation between Africa and the Caribbean, with Ghana taking a leadership role in advocating for deeper Afro-Caribbean engagement.

This aligns with the objectives of the Africa-Caribbean Summit, which held its inaugural session in 2021 under the theme “Unity Across Continents and Oceans: Opportunities for Deepening Integration”.
